Yes, Dyson is absolutely the way to go. I have long hair, my husband has allergies and we have pets and kids. If you need a vacuum that can handle a big job and leave it spotless, that won't regurgitate unhealthy air, that pivots easily to get into hard to reach places, go with the dyson. (If you have hair issues, like me, go for the Animal)
I've heard that the robotic roombas are fun. My hubbie and I thought about it, but we figured we needed an big strong vacuum for our home! I've had very good experience with this website: www.powervacs.com
I think dept stores are too expensive and have limited supply of vacuums.

For you depends on where you are and what is available
at what price.
If you can, go to the library and look at Consumer Reports
recent issue..maybe October 2006. They rate different
vacuum cleaners and give advice on cost, models to
best suit your needs ( upright vs. canister, bagless vs. bag, self propelled, dust removal,
and so on). You can look up Consumer Reports online, but
I think they charge.
In my experience, Hoover has some good ones and some
really bad ones. Dyson is good if you have the cash. And you
need no special bags or tools. Bissel is OK and has small
inexpensive models.

I LOVE my Roomba by iRobot! It's great for day in and day out regular cleaning! Even my "teenage" sons don't mind vacuuming with it! You just turn it on and it does the rest, even goes back to its home base to recharge when it's finished. The only thing you ever have to bother with is dumping the lint filter and occasionally cleaning the beater brush.
And my mother loves hers! (and her Scooba, the robot that sweeps, mops, scrubs and dries hard surface floors!)
But for deep cleaning, my Rainbow wins hands down...
So, I have both, obviously. I've had experience with Hoovers and Orecks and so forth, but these are my top two choices.

If you're willing to spend some money, Dyson vacuum cleaners are great. They sell them at Target. Don't buy a Kenmore, unless you want to drive out to Sears every time you need a new filter.

The oreck, the Kirby canister or the sears canister vacuums are your best bet.The average upright vacuum does not have a lot of suction power but those listed especially the Kirby canister and the sears canister will pickup most anything. The oreck is lightweight and powerful but the motor is small and overheats easily.

Dryson is greta but quite expensive,if you want a quality vacuum for less money, purchase a Hoover..I paid under 100.00 for it from Walmart 3 years ago and it STILL cleans my carpets like the first day i bought it! ;)

I absolutely LOVE my Bissell. It picks up EVERYTHING. But if you have a good $2000 then I would go with a Rainbow. My dads Rainbow lasted about 15 - 20 years(til I accidently broke it). Rainbow's and Bissell's beat Dyson anyday!!!

Dyson are great, they're a little pricey but you get what you pay for. I think it was worth the price. It definitely picks-up dirt and whatever else is on your carpet.
