in every musical, the actors will pre-record their songs so that the boom mic (the one that hangs over head to pick up the dialog and sound effects) doesn't have to pick up the song. So the actors will lay down the song before hand, then they will shoot the scene, and then the song will be added to the real film in the editing room.

So yes, Zac Efron lip-synced (just like everyone else did)...but he was lip-syncing with his own voice.

Nearly every song on any film will use this same technique that I just described. It's the easiest way to do it and will ensure great audio quality.

I hope that helps.

Well first of all, on the movie, they all recorded the songs and then played it when the characters were acting. Its not that they were lip singing all the time, they just played the already recorded songs while acting. It makes the song easier to hear and also makes it louder. About Zac though, he wasnt really singing. That is one of the reasons he is not on tour with the rest of the cast. Andrew Seeley is the real voice of Zac Efron in the movie, too bad he didnt get enough credit for it though. I hope your question is answered!

in the movie he does cause he records it first and then while he does all his dancing and other stuff he won't have to ALSO be singing perfectly each time

also u can tell if his lips aren't exactly where the song is
sometimes he closes his mouth to early or opens to early those little things

because when he "sings" he opens his mouth WAY too wide and if you look at the high school musical extras and look at the little videos of the cast (not from the movie) he sings. and the voice he's singing in isn't REMOTELY close to the one that's used in HSM.
