i just turned 16 and my dad and were talking about cars recently actually.
try the Jetta, a small toyta or honda.
don't buy an SUV first, they guzzle gas and aren't too safe around turns if you're not careful.
stick with a small sedan or something until you get your lisence and you're used to driving.
tell me how it is!

you know what I earned and saved up for years for a car and never found one at 16. I would not buy a car at 16. I am now 17 and completely understand what my mom always meant by not getting a brand new car. People are these days are moron drivers and everyone gets reckless while drivings sometimes. I had gotten from my grandma, a 1989 Chevy Celebrity which was built like a tank and comfortable. I soon got a White 2 door Grand Am 1995 and love it and is safe and many features. If the kid wants a car, do not go and buy what he wants but something he has the ability to drive, that he can be in comfortably, and under $3,500 which may not be much but if he works for the money and can show he needs the car responsibly, then let him buy it not the parents. A kid who may be spoiled once, may think he can be spoiled forever....
Besides there is no point to buying a nice car that is perfect because chances are, it will be demolished soon and especially by younger drivers which adults are at fault too but only do it if you got the extra cash and maybe you should talk to him about car insurance as well...a car is fine and is good as long it runs well and gets you to your destination and home not for joy riding and waste parents gas money...wait does this kid even have a job? He is only 16 and is a new driver...wow scary been there and earned everything from day one of the automobile world including high insurance rates, gas, and bought my own car.

Honda and Volvo are both good cars for new drivers. Volvos have a higher safety rating. Both get great gas mileage. Insurance costs should also be a factor for a young driver. Check with your insurance agent to see how much it is for both of them. The higher the cost to repair a vehicle, the more the insurance & I believe the Volvo costs more. Kia and Hyunda are both cheap vehicles, stay away from used on those.

Cadillac Escalade..... Actually if you are on a tight budget and want a cheap but dependable car the cheapest car on the market is the Kia Rio. Well I say cheapest there are a couple of american made cars that are cheaper but you want them to run longer that 2 months. The Kia comes with a great warranty. I bought the first one off the lot back in 2000 and its still running well today with well over 100k miles. Great gas mileage and extremely dependable. I am seriously thinking about a toyota yaris next time. I like the toyota name.

Do some research and get a car that is 5 star safety rated, anti-lock brakes and traction control. Plus don't get a new car, get a year or two old car with less than 40,000 miles and save on the insurance.

Anything that doesn't go over 30mph and gets about 20 mpg and is extremely padded!!!
But barring that I would say to get a rice-burner. They have great mpg ratings and are also usually in the top ranks safety-wise. And value is great so long as the 16 year old in question keeps up maintainance on said vehicle. Good luck!

A used Honda Civic, or something.
You want something cheap and safe. Chances are, after you finish high school and college or whatever, you'll have murdered this car. So, once you're done with that, you can go get a good job and get a good car. But right now you just want something that's cheap and can get you places...unless, you totally have the extra money to buy several cars.

Something safe, reliable, gas efficient, and affordable. I think used cars with 10,000 to 40,000 miles on them are some of the best deals you can get. Some still have warranties, but if you go with a reliable brand (ie Honda, Toyota, Nissan, etc.), you should get ALOT of miles out of your new-ish vehicle. Do your research beforehand & shop smart. Good luck!

A Honda Civic or a Toyota Corolla would be 3 great choices.
My sister in law bought her daughter a Honda Fit and it has been a very nice 'little' car.
All of them are way to small for me to fit into comfortably.
