My children always had pet rats when they were children, and as classroom pets. They are smart, can learn their names be trained. I have so many good memories of our pet rats. Like one particular rat we had as a class pet: The kids would get the rat out and this rat LOVED to jump. So, the kids would put her one one desk. Then they'd all gather around another desk, because if you were standing close she'd just climb up your shirt. But she wanted you to pick her up really bad so the kids would gather around another desk that was about 2 feet from the desk the rat was on. Then they'd call her. AND she'd jump to the desk like a little sailing acrobat to get to the kids. (We put a pillow on the floor, just in case.) Also, some of the kids would take the rats out of the cage and put them in their desk. Then you'd see the rats crawling on them then back in the desks. On day, one of the kids forgot the rats in their desk. We looked back and they were running to catch up our line.

I had a pet rat. I loved him so much! He was smart, and clean. But whenever I told someone I had a rat they'd freak out and start saying EWWWWW. I don't see what the problem is. Rats are great pets. My rat loved everyone and he even licked peoples faces, and he was very obidient. He even cuddled with us.

I think your kids are very lucky to have a mother like you. How refreshing to hear someone not freaking out about the typical "scary rat" stuff and appreciating the animal for what it really is. I'm sure your kids will have many fun pet stories to tell.
P.S. I always had too many cats hangin' around to have a pet rat but I bet they are fun.

Rats are great pets! They just get a bad rap because most people think of them as "sewer rats"...which are NOTHING like the pet rats you can buy at the pet store..or...like me...get one from a friend! They are very smart...clean animals and a lot of people don't know that because they won't even give them a chance. I had my rat til he died of old age...I was heart broken. Unfortunately...after mine died..I went looking for another one and I got a VERY bad bite from one....now I'm scared to death of them and can't bring myself to hold one...I try...but I just freak out...but the bite I got was a bad one! But I still like rats! :)

Rats are definitely overlooked, when it comes to ideal small animals for pets.
It really does amaze me when parents bring their young children to a pet store, and end up bringing home a Russian Dwarf hamster instead.
I always bring my rats to the pet store, and allow people to pet and handle them. I've had so many comments about "I never knew rats were so neat".

Hear, hear!
I am head-over-heals in love with these small animals. So much so that I have dedicated my life to them since 1997, and since then I have made it my mission to educate the public on the wonders of these small animals.
Last year, in my province, the pest control officers tried to get the government to ban pet rats. I helped fight the ban and us rat-keepers won.

whilst i investigate a mouse, I see this little soul packed with innocence and interest. they're additionally a lot greater interactive than maximum 'specialists' supply them credit for. I even have had mice who communicate up a typhoon, climb throughout me, flow to sleep in my hand, make bruxing noises (a demonstration of contentment) once I carry them or enable them to take a seat on my neck above my back collar (a fave place). additionally they're going to positioned up to being petted, nonetheless oddly adequate they choose being nuzzled with my nostril. i've got in no way had rats, yet i be attentive to they consume mice, and so it form of feels that over the path of evolution, they'd have lost distinctive the innocence of mice.

When I was in college, I had 2. Mick and Tygger. They were the greatest pets!!! The coolest thing was watching them eat a grape. They would eat the entire inside and leave just the skin!!!! They were very clean, kept their cage clean, used only one corner as the bathroom, and were VERY gentle!!!!!
Sadly, I became allergic to them and never got any more after they passed. I love to watch them though!!
