1.make sure you change your filter media once per month
2. Do not listen to people that suggest changing 25% of your water once per month. You need the bacterias in the water to keep your current nitrate and ph levels.
3. ALWAYS USE DECLOR WHEN ADDING WATER!! This is the biggest mistake made by pet owners. It will kill the fish.
4. Depending on your fish, keep a tank temp of 78-84 degrees f. for tropical fish and 65-72 degrees for cold watter fish.
5.Stir your tanks gravel up about once every two months.
6. DONT OVERFEED YOUR FISH!! This will cause the water to become un-healthy and smell. They only need a tiny amount of food, they will seem hungry but they will keep eating until they kill themselves, they dont know when to stop!
7. Always be sure your tank is aireted. Use a good air pump and air stone for your tank.
8. Keep a light on at night and off during the day.
Hope these tips help, they have worked for me for 10+ years

most areas of the country now have additives in the water, so you need to go to the fish store and get the proper liquid to clean the water when you add water every week..you need to get a clean five gallon bucket that had nothing in it before and clean it out with salt an use only clean water.NEVER any soap. even a trace of soap will kill the fish. now depending on the size of your tank, you need to take about 5-10 % of the water from the bottom of the tank out by using a special tool used to clean the bottom of the tank, it is hose with a larger end on it, take the water out and put new water in every week.. ad the liquid to the new water before you put it in the tank, make sure your filters are working and clean and make sure the air stone is working and make sure the water temp. is in the proper range..use an aquarium thermometer, and feed them less than you think they need, watch their fins, they should just about always be nice and tall, if a problem go to store and tell them. they may sell you meds to put in
it really isn't all that bad, really
good luck

You want to research on your fish breed and see if it is either a tropical or a fresh water breed. Then you want to buy a heater for your fish tank/bowl if it is tropical but if it isn't then all you need to do is feed them the proper food and don't switch foods. never put small fish in with big fish... trust me u will only have a big fish if so. Hope that Helps:) have fun with your new fish.

Get a tank with a top on it, and make sure the top stays on. My last fish jumped out of it's tank. Also make sure your tank stays at a good temperature. Keeping it by a window is usually not a good idea. too much fluxuation is not good for the fish.

1) make sure you have a filter, plenty off plants for the fish to breathe and a water ager to rid the water of chlorine and chloride
2) do not over feed fish or starve fish. may cause bloating /starvation
3)limit the hours of the light turned on of your aquarium, as this encourages green algea growth quite rapidly. dangerous for fish
4) do not tap glass as this disturbs the fish

Get a good fish book. You'll need it. Also, NEVER wash your fish tank out with soap! Make sure you feed them small amounts, they don't need a lot of food. NEVER NEVER NEVER give them human food (although large fish can handle some lettuce, I would talk to your pet assistant before actually giving them lettuce.)
That's all I have to say. Get a few fish books from the library. What you like, BUY. You'll need it.
