My father-in-law (FIL) is now a craftsman, and he has built some amazing things. He built a rocking horse for his grandson (my son), a bar for my husband (back in his bachelor days), and a dresser (also from my husband's bachelor days, more specifially 12 years ago).

The dresser was his first major project, and as one can assume, the dresser is gorgeous but lacks function.

Example: The lowest drawer had it's face come off ages ago, and two of the drawers won't open all the way due to the drawer being oddly shaped.

In other words: very annoying

While I love the thought and love behind it, it no longer functions as a dresser and doesn't match our bedroom (why would anyone match to something that doesn't work?).

I've spoken to my husband, but I find it difficult in myself to find myself drawing the line between demanding a change and embracing the love of a father.

We've asked his father to fix it, but it seems to keep getting pushed to the back of his list.

I know I'm being whiny and overly emotional. That's what you get with pregnancy hormones. It's been a long tough day, and I just need some outside opinions. My husband and I have spoken about this somewhat, but we have yet to come to a solution.

If we had an extra room, this would go into it. But...we don't.

If your husband does not want to get rid of it then you need to meet him half way. Be creative. Is it possible to get a nice piece of fabric to cover it and use it as a table of some sort? You can put your knic knacks, family photos or whatever. If that is not an option then suggest to your husband to ask his dad if he would like to have it back and then he can fix it at his leisure. If not then ask your husband to put it in the garage and let him figure out what to do with it. Thats all I got. Hope this helped.

Look up a craftsman in a directory and make a call regarding how much it would cost to get the changes made you require. Then in casual conversation with your husband mention that you got a quote for such and such to be done but don't make it a big issue. Watch it rise up the priority list of the father in law like mercury on a hot day...lol

Hi,are you able to look at the dresser and invision another purpose for it? Maybe turned into a book case if you remove the drawers and the parts that go with them? Last but not least, have you spoken to your father- in - law and shared the problem with him? Good luck with a touchy situation, family heirlooms can certainly cause chaos when they have outlived their purpose.

Tell your father-in-law that you really need a working dresser, so if he istoo busy t fix it, that is fine, but you are going to have to buy a new one. Tell him yu are planning on purchasing one in 1 or 2 weeks (whichever sounds more reasnable).

Tell the FIL that you apperciate the dresser, but it's not working out right due to it not functioning right, would it be o.k to get rid of it. Also, see if you can put it in your shed or storage building.Good Luck!!
