When I divorced my husband of 19 years I thought I still loved him, just didnt want to live with him anymore. Then when I went through the whole thing - the moving out, splitting things, arguing, the actual divorce with no regrets, no tears, no second thoughts I realized that it was indifference. At the time of the divorce he hated me. Recently we spoke and he told me that he feels nothing for me anymore either, just indifference. It took HIM 5 years to get there though. It will happen

This is an interesting question. I was watching the movie Firewall a couple weeks ago, and one of the "lines" really struck me. The guy said, "I don't hate you Sarah, I just don't care about you". That really made sense to me. I think I'd rather have someone hate me... at least there is some emotion there. Once you get to the indifference stage, it really is over.... I'm sure that probably happens shortly before the divorce, and definitely after... Most people probably don't care about the person, as long as they don't bother the other, and/or keep interfering with their life. They just want to forget about the person, the problems, and move on to a better place in their own life.

well, first comes love, then the indifference which brings on the divorce, and then comes hate when kids and alimony and stuff are involved, if no kids then the indifference continues.

I think the indifference happens after all the fighting, court battles and child custody are through with....until then, you can't be indifferent, there's just too much at stake.
