earlier today, on my dell inspiron 1501, I went to right-clicked properties on my computer (where the window comes up that says all the info about your system), and processor speed read something like 748 Mhz, where it always read 1.60 Ghz. Just a few minutes ago, I checked out properties again and processor speed read 1.99 Ghz. is there some reason why I somehow lost processor speed then apparently gained back the lost speed with interest?

To:sxyxtxaxkxw, learn what Cool N Quiet is before you tell people they are retarded, you really just made an idiot out of yourself. Now I am not saying that is what is causing this particular issue, especially since it is reading higher than normal at some times, but Cool N Quiet does slow down the processor at times, and does cause it to show a slower speed in system properties.

EDIT: I am sorry to the asker that we seemed to have started this debate which doesn't really do much to answer your question, but just to once again correct sxyxtxaxkxw, the Inspiron 1501 uses an AMD Turion processor, hence it has Cool N Quiet. Again, this may or may not be what is causing the problem you described, but it is a possibility. As to sxyxtxaxkxw, you really should take your own advice, think before you speak.

glitch.
or somehow you managed to overclock your processor without knowing? i highly doubt

edit:

to: computertech and the guy under him, youre both retarded.
the properties feature in windows doesnt show how much is being used at that moment but whats the manufactured speed of the processor. So if i buy a 3 Ghz intel its gonna say 3Ghz not 1.9 Ghz if im not using it, genious.

Think before you speak.

edit again:

"To determine if the driver is loaded, first look in the notification area in Windows taskbar. You should see icon of a flag. If not, go into the power applet of the Control Panel and see if there is a tab for Intel SpeedStep technology"

Dell Inspirion comes with Intel, considering Cool N Quiet is for AMD, this has nothing to do with the subject. So hese using Intel obviously, and considering he never specified that he was using SpeedStep or else there would be no use for the question, considering he would obviously know what it is used for if he installed the driver or changed it in the power settings. So we can assuming within good reason that hese using Windows XP, and an Intel pentium M, and not using SpeedStep thus i was correct in my original statement. Windows is only reporting the speed that the processor is set to run at (Pentium 4 being 3ghz it would report 3 ghz or something close.)

Dont attepmt to correct me when im correct to begin with.

Your processor slows down when it doesn't need to be working at full speed to save on heat and electricity. It is using Intel's SpeedStep or AMD's Cool 'n' Quiet.

It could be a simple malfunction. If it persists, and you actually notice the change in speed, then I would take it in for diagnostics. It could be a simple error on the read depending on what you were doing at the time.

Its a power feature. It powers down the cpu while not in use, increases it when the cpu power is needed.
