What do I need to do? I already know the basics of VB6, C++, and Java. What other languages should I learn and how do I get my foot in the door?

I'm a professional software engineer. What I did was to start writing some programs just for fun and practice. What I did was to get a book of puzzles and games from the magazine rack at the local supermarket. Then I started writing programs to solve some of the puzzles. It was difficult, challenging and fun.

Once you can solve a few of the puzzles with computer programs, you're ready to start getting a job somewhere. You may have to work for a lot less than you want to build experience, but you'll get there.

There's more to being a good programmer than just knowing the programming languages, but that's a good start. Since companies are always looking for programmers, you can try answering some want ads. Go for a part-time job if you're not ready to let go your present gig. You'll learn a boatload from the other programmers you'll be working with, and learning by doing is powerful -- most programmers get into the biz that way.

VB6 won't get you much anymore.

The wealthiest and most successful of programmers know either PHP/MYSQL, ASP/ASPX/MSQL, and C++

The key to success is finding a startup in silicon valley that you really believe in. Go to meetings (http://meet-up.com) and meet entrepreneurs who will offer you equity to help develop their idea. You'll not only get salary, but you'll be offered stock options that could literally make you a billionaire.

Also, people are switching from offline software to software as a service by the loads. In only a few short years from now, offline software will pretty much be depleted.

Good luck with your ventures! Feel free to contact me (mah10538) ... im trying to get a startup off the ground myself.
