It depends on what you have already. What you really need is a computer. If you are running windows there are some programs like fruityloops, magix music maker, Reason, Sony Acid, cakewalk, and sonar. If you are running a macintosh with OSX you can use Reason, logic pro, logic express, garageband, pro tools, and sonar.
If you want to go with straight hardware you will need a sythesizer an mpc, a multi-track recorder, and a condensor microphone.
There are other things too, like a usb Keyboard controller, a usb microphone, and a MPD which is made by AKAI. my advice would be to get an apple G5 powermac and an MBOX. and if you get a new computer try to get at least a dual core or a dual processor. A dual processor is faster than a dual core. In order to start recording you should get adobe audition. It has a whole bunch of effects and stuff on it. You will need at least 256 megabytes of ram. but get as much ram as you can. Remember your computer is only as fast as its slowest part.
You will also need more than one hard drive. One to hold the programs and one to Store your songs and beats. If you get a computer you should try to get one with a SATA hard drive b/c it operates faster than an original ATA-133 hard drive. A major thing to do is make sure you have a cd-burner. And mac's cant use regular everyday cd-drives they have to have apple rom.

You need to use program like fruity loops, intent and ableton that do not require different apparatus. They're all relatively effortless to use and a with quick learn on the manuals you could be up and jogging inside an hour or so. These don't require hardware as they can simply use your computer's on board sound card a good way to do the job great. The intricate bit is available in when you need to file vocals to your monitor. This is as a rule where designated hardware is available in. However at the present time you purchase usb microphones which you just plug in to your pc (or Mac) and opt for it for your software. (fruity loops and rationale cannot record audio you could ought to a further application like ableton or cubase) hope this helped

Making music is fun. You could spend years learning one instrument, and still not be able to produce the sounds that you feel inside. With Dr. Drum
Beat Making software you can do it all, and you can do it right now.
Dr. Drum makes it possible for anyone, even someone who has no formal music education, or playing experience to create awesome sounds and
music tracks in any genre.

Maybe some turntables and a mixer?
I think you could basiclly use any sound;instrument;sound clip and mix it with a good beat and you would get a good rap. You should look into Techno songs, because most have no singing and some have great beats.
