The day befor x-mas my Mom who is caring for my dog, fed her some turkey, etc. The next day she began vomiting and the runs, both containing blood. we took her to the vet the day after christmas, they checked her blood count, and checked her for other things, gave her an IV to replinish from fluid loss, gave her some med's, kept her overnight, then placed her on special food... she isnt running fever, but she isnt acting normal. The vomiting has lessened, but the runs have continued, we are having trouble getting her to eat much of anything now! We called the vet back, but they never returned our calls, I am very very worrried about her. The vet seemed to think her bowels have just been irretated and inflamed from the turkey etc. she had the day before x-mas.. Any help would be appreciated. She is an 8 year old min pin, only other medical condidtion is fatty tumors on her chest area. Thanks ahead of time. Brandy in KY

Pancreatitis is common in dogs around the holidays, due to the feeding of turkey, ham, and other fatty meats and other treats.

This can be a very serious condition!!! Take the dog BACK to the vet and have it checked for it!!!! It could save the dogs life!!!

sounds to me like pancreaitis....... min pins are known for this. turkey usually will not hurt a dog, but if the dog is not use to eating human food, just a little bit can harm it.. pancreaitis can kill and what spazrats said about the pedialyte and etc, is a good idea to keep the dog from dehydrating. If you cannot get any pedialyte, the regular gatorade will work instead. I would contact an emergency vet just in case because this sounds serious. your vet should of never blew u off, but it is possible they were so busy that it got put on the back burner which should of not happened. Go to another vet is my suggestion really fast...

Hey Brandy, I'm just wracking my brain trying to help you out here. Everything I researched says that turkey is an ok food for dogs. But, if she eats turkey once in a blue moon then I can see where it would be upsetting to her stomach.

If your dog were a larger breed I would say to allow her the self-fast. A fast cleans out the body and heals the stomach. But, since she's a little Min Pin her small body cannot take loosing too much weight.

It could very well be that she is dehydrated. A state of dehydration makes the body feel awful with muscle aches, joint pain, and headache. If she is still vomiting with diarrhea she most definitely is dehydrated to some point. Electrolyte imbalance will also make her feel awful.

Suggestions to make her feel better:
Pedialyte, an electrolyte formula that is given to babies with diarrhea
Suggestions to get her to drink more:
Chicken broth, beef broth, found in the soup isle
Suggestions to get her to eat more:
Well-cooked rice in chicken or beef broth.
Baby food, any meat/veg/carb variety (ah, sans turkey), might have to feed her from your finger, but go ahead and spoil her.
Nutrical, a calorie-rich malt-flavored paste found in pet stores.
To help stop the diarrhea and sooth the stomach:
Kaopectate for dogs and cats
Immodium for dogs and cats
homeopathic remedy

And get back to your vet or another vet ASAP.

I was a Vet Tech for 6 years. The turkey could have irritated her. Any change of diet will do that. You can give a dog Immodium to stop the diarrhea. I am not sure of the dosage so try calling a 24 hour emergency animal clinic. They should be good at telling you the dosage for a dog her size.

Any chance there could have been a bone or that she ate something else. Blockage in the intestines could be an issue as well.

Of course, I'm not a vet...just making suggestions.

I wish her well.

i would call an emergency clinic or the emergency number listed on your vet's answering machine. they may be closed is why they haven't returned your calls. you can give her pedialyte to replenish fluids lost, if she won't drink it you can give it to her from a syringe that you can find in the baby area of stores. it sounds like she is getting worse and something may have come up that wasn't apparent when you took her to your vet. call the emergency clinic and ask them what you need to do. good luck with her. since she's a little dog they can become very serious and dehydrated very quickly.

Find another vet ASAP. Your current vet should not be brushing you off like this, they seem very irresponsible. If you must, go to an emergency vet. Good luck. I really hope it is nothing life threatening.
