Average life span is 1 to 3 years. Yes they have been known to live longer, and of course shorter. Fish like peop;e are all different and depending on their health and happiness etc. Do you keep them in a small bowl or give them a nice sized tank. Feed them well and take care of their tank etc.

Most of our bettas live at least 4 years, with some going on for up to 7, and since we breed them so we know when they start life. As with anything, some if it has to do with genes but a lot also has to do with keeping them in a large enough aquarium (not those tiny small tanks or bowls--our single males live in 5 gal tanks, the females communally in 20+ tanks), keeping the tanks scrupulously clean at all times, doing weekly water changes, feeding a variety of nutritional food. We seldom see any illness in our gang (usually only in a new fish which we treat immediately in a hospital tank).

The longest living one i have had lived just a little over 3 years, and the tank had a disease breakout that killed him.....otherwise im sure he would have lived longer. They usually say the average lifespan is about 2-3 years...but with good care i wouldn't be suprised to see one live to be 4 or 5.

I had one that lived for two years and one that lived a couple months...they would have lived longer, but they kamikazed out of their separate bowls onto a freshly bleached kitchen floor and sanitized kitchen counter within hours of each other. The replacement fish has a lid on his tank to prevent further suicide attempts.

I have heard that they can live for a long time, but mind have always died within a week. I suspect that I was a victim of false advertising on the part of the fairground staff.

My sister has had her betta for over two years and he's still going strong! The average is 2-4 I believe. It also depends on how well you take care of them.

they only live about 2-4 years. the best way to keep them longer is to get a double bowl were they can see each other without them getting into a fight. cool they live longer with two!!!
