Again... Wikipedia is your friend.

Watergate, per se, was about a break-in of the Democratic headquarters in the Watergate Hotel by a group of burglars hired by the Republican Committee to Re-elect the President.

Before it was over, Nixon was charged with lying about his knowledge of the breakin, as well as using the powers of his office to keep people from finding out. In addition, other dirty tricks were discovered, including evidence of Nixon's involvement to discredit the guy who published the "Pentagon Papers."

The Watergate affair dragged on and on. Finally, with the economy a mess, and nothing but Watergate news on all three TV channels (yes, there were only 3), people were glad when Nixon resigned.

www.history.com Nixon and the Republican party robbed the Democratic headquarters for files and were caught because someone on the inside Deep Throat was a squeal cheese and the Washington Post exposed the crime and Nixon and all the others were to be prosecuted. Nixon denied knowing of these events, but he was nuts, and then Pres. Ford gave him a pardon from an impending impeechment. Some went to jail but most of them escaped, and they are still out there today. GW Bush and Clan. The Watergate issue can be viewed with audio/video as well.

The Watergate Hotel in Washington, DC was the Democratic National Headquarters. Then-President Nixon ordered the burglary to get information. When the burglars were caught, he denied any knowledge. The ensuing investigation ultimately ended with his resignation from the Presidency.

Let me break it down to you; Nixon had his boys go into this building called Watergate to find out what the Democrats were doing back in June of 1972, which was an election year mind you; there was a young black guard on duty at the time named Wills(he lived to regret all that too) who kind of tipped off the folks, and it got press along with a lot of denials from Nixon's camp. that went on for like two years. Nixon got reelected too despite of it, but he sure paid for it and resigned in August of 1974; I remember when that happened too; To be honest, the Dems didn't have a strong candidate with McGovern so he could have went back in without the stuff he did; but as they say curiosity killed the cat.

Nixon was the candidate of the Republican Party for reelection.
The Democratic Party’s Headquarters in the Watergate Building in Washington were bugged by electronic listening devices. It became clear that some of Nixon’s closest advisers were involved. Nixon itself left office when he knew that he would be impeached and removed. It was the 1st resignation of a Pres in US history. He was pardoned by his successor, G. Ford, but his closest advisers were prosecuted & convicted.(Watergate Scandal 1972-74)

people who have been related with the White homestead have been quickly related to the wear-in. It seems that Nixon recorded each verbal substitute with those individuals up till after the story broke. The White homestead grow to be ordered to instruct over those tapes, which it did, besides the undeniable fact that, there grow to be an 18 minute hollow wherein the president became off the recorder. there has been lots hypothesis as to what grow to be reported for the time of those 18 minutes. i don't have faith Nixon grow to be ever quickly related to the Watergate injury-in. The suspicion grow to be that he ordered it. He resigned in the past he could desire to be impeached.

The actual break in was underhand and dishonest, but would not have destroyed a Presidency. What really brought Nixon down was the cover up.
