It depends a lot on your amp. You don't need a pedal if you have any tube amp with a Master Volume (i.e many after about 1972) but you will if you use either a one-stage (most from the 60's and before) or solid state amp (yes- we all know you shouldn't use them if possible). Similarly most modelling amps have the "right" settings dialled in. Smaller old tube amps can be overdriven without a pedal assuming the venue is not too small. Solid state amps need a Distortion pedal rather than an Overdrive (you can't overdrive transistors). The pickups also play a role. You need to disort single coils more, and overdrive humbuckers. The Ibanez TS-808 and TS-9s are still supreme but I get a great sound from an original TS-10 or BOSS Turbo Overdrive OD-2, with a Marshall Guvner' as a backup. The secret is to also have the right amount of reverb as the Presence of the slightly distorted sound has a lot to do with whether it sounds right. You may also need a Compressor if you are trying to sculpt a specific tone - but by this stage we are a long way from a pure guitar-amp tone - and it will show. I think "Distortion" pedals aren pretty much all the same - unless they are used for metal rather than just blues as you seldom dial them up above 2 for the Blues. The sound soon becomes totally unacceptable.

i don't know how it would sound with a marshall half stack, but i used a Boss Metal Zone stomp box for most SOAD songs that i played. it has extra midrange eq knobs for more definition
