To get on the pill, you do need a prescription. You can get this from most doctors, or from your local Planned Parenthood. Most of them will want you to undergo a Pap smear, but some do not. The Pap is really not a big deal.
The effectiveness of the pill depends on what type it is, and when in your cycle you start taking it. Most pills, if you start them within a few days after your period begins, become effective immediately, or within seven days. Your doctor will tell you when it is okay to leave off unprotected sex... keep in mind, the pill has ZERO STD protection, so you should still use condoms if you are not 100% sure both you and your partner are disease free. Many women like to take backup birth control for the first month, since you never know if you will have a bad reaction to the pill, and sperm are persistent little wigglers.

Make an appointment with your doctor. First they will end up giving you a pelvic exam, then they will either perscribe you with a form of the pill right away, or else they will scedule another appointment for that. But let me warn you, the pill can have quite a few side effects and not all doctors will warn you about them... I know this from experience. The pill can make you gain excessive weight, give you major mood swings/depression, give you excess fatigue or dizziness and even severe headaches. The pill is not right for everyone, so if you do start experiencing side effects, stop taking the pill immediately and try to get a different prescription. But DO NOT resort to the Depo Provera shot... I started gaining 20lbs a month! And that is very common in women who have taken the shot. So just be aware of your options. And good luck!

You need to go to a clinic or doctor and get a prescription. It should become effective after a month.

See your obgyn and I was told that it only takes 1 month for it to be come effective, If I was you I would do some research as to what you would like to use, because your doctor is going to ask you what type but she may recommend some to you too.
