M = 1000
C = 100, but when placed before an M, means 100 less than 1000. So CM = 900
L = 50
I = 1

So 1951.

M = 1000
C = 100
L = 50
1 = 1

However, when a letter is placed ahead of another letter this means that the amount equal to the letter in front is deducted from the second letter

ie: CM = -100 + 1000 = 900

Therefore M = 1000
CM = 900
L = 50
I = 1
Total 1951
