Conveying your message effectively & making sure that it is understood. It may be verbal or non-verbal (sometimes you can communicate more with a gesture, a hug, a kiss, a sincere look of sympathy, meaningful eye contact than you can with mere words.) Some people are afraid of real communication. They don't listen. They don't say what they mean. They are afraid to make eye contact. They hide from having a real relationship. Then they wonder why they're unhappy & getting divorced. Communication is the most important (& often most neglected) part of a relationship.

I would say sharing and understanding.
We communicate with others because we want to share our feelings on a subject and we want to be understood.
We are also curious about what other people feel about things and want to understand why and what makes them feel the way they do.
It's one of the reasons why we're drawn to each other.
Contact. Most living things need to make contact.
