You could apply as an engineer and then change it to socialogy in the first year. Or you could just apply in sociology if that's what you really want to do. I guess it depends on how high or low your other scores were and what the guidelines are for the college you are applying to. Most colleges you don't need to even declare your major as a freshman.

JC is correct with everything she said.

I advise,... do not choose a major based on scores alone.
I selected Chemical Engineering based on the fact that all my AP classes in HS were either Chemistry/Math/ or Physics. Seemed like a nice fit... but I didnt enjoy it. Im an Economic Major with a focus on Secondary Education now,... it has alot of the same characteristics of Engineering, but the focus is very different.

If you are sure of what you want to do with your life (believe me, you are not) then declare the major of your choice, but do not over focus your courses... take some bredth classes to stretch your interests (even if they do not go towards your major... thats how I found Economics). You should also consider visiting the career center... they can help with your interest inventory and give you some alternative options you may not have thought of before.

And never think you can not change your major,... you can change it an unlimited # of times (I'd recommend notmore than once a semmester... but some people have). General rule though... have a good idea of what you want to do with your life during your sophomore year so you can focus your last years getting your major classes in, but then again... if its not whatyou reallly want to do... it would ultimately be a waste of your time.

Happy soul-searching.

Yea, it depends on the school. If the school is strong in engineering, then perhaps applying as an engineer isnt the way to get in, and you would be better off just applying as a sociology major. If the engineering department isnt too competitive, perhaps it may be easier to get in as one.

It is definitely possible to switch majors as a freshman. During your first year you have to take General Education courses anyway. Most colleges don't acknowledge majors until you've reached ~60 semester units.

at the school I went to, you'd have a better chance just going in as a sociology major
