It seems like a really odd fixation to me. Something about the nexus of love and death... but what is your opinion on this?

Mainly narcissism (do you know somebody more narcissistic than a vampire?) Also eternity, evil, cannibalism, sex, all these topics are related to the basic impulses of life and death
If you can, see the Ingmar Bergman's movie called "Persona"
I just found a link about it
Thanks for this question, I think I will see Persona again

it stirs up this thrill in a person. thrills causes excitement which causes the 'rush' in blood. this leads to a 'high' feeling in us. its the same thing as taking a roller coaster ride.
(thrill = an almost pleasurable sensation of fright)

and there are others who like the sight of blood. so seeing those vampires satisfies them i guess.

vampires are the outcome of human's imagination. none of us would have thought of it but some dude has come up with it. now that itself will cause the fascination. vampires' dark aura is magnetic - something dark/evil is always magnetic. the movies, buffy the vampire slayer and all have helped to give these vampires more credit.

vampires are attractive these days so girls will like them. and they are strong, powerful, scary, bloody.. these are liked by the guys. they are scary. this is liked by the kids.

and as human, we won't get this much excitement when someone dies in the line of duty but we will when we hear about vampires or aliens.

I find it fascinating that vampire lore can be found in so many countries and different cultures. Obviously something has drawn all of these people over the ages to have tales of vampires. It's interesting trying to find out how it can be so wide spread.

Everybody bleeds.

The lure of vampires is directly related to the power of dark magic. Humans are naturally drawn to what can provide great power. Yes there are Vampires, Lycanthrope and a war raging between the two. Humans get caught in the crossfire, and with the taste of power they have witnessed over the years they are drawn to all things dark, mysterious and mighty. But be forewarned you are only pawns to be used by both sides and both will turn on you, we are not patient with your lack of judgment.

Because they are fascinated by the thought of immortality, or the closest thing they can come to it: undeadness.

Being part of the undead isn't really immortality, btw. It is a pale second-rate substitute for real life.

They are cursed, they live forever, but they cannot come out in the sunlight, and they need human blood to survive. A perfect science fiction scenario of a question of : What would you do to trade for eternal life ?
An interesting concept to fantasize about.

I think there is a certain fascination with being scared, and with the fear of the unknown. Consider the popularity of writers such as Stephen King and of horror movies.

Because of the 3 things all humans seem interested in or afraid of. Sex, blood, and immortality (which is related to death).
