Goldfish HELP! :)

This might sound silly and funny at the same time, but there is one little thing that's confusing the living-daylights out of us... Our Goldfish has changed colors!

My Husband and I have 40-gallon aquarium that contains 7 Goldfish, 1 Gourami, 2 Danios and 1 Betta (believe it or not... yes, we do have Male "KGB-Undercover-Agent" Betta inside the fish-tank). When we got them (without Betta), we had only one deep-grey-green colored Goldfish and the rest were orange-with-white colors Goldfish. Starting about 2 or 3 weeks ago, the darker colored Goldfish started changing its color to orange with flakes of white. As of right now, the fish is totally orange only the spine-fin, the tail and a little of the side-fins are still the present color. The question(s) of the day: Why did it do that?! Is the Goldfish confused as to which side to join? Is it sick? Or, is it a naturally occuring phenomenon in the wild?

Please help to explain this situation. Thank you so much!

The reason why we call Betta "KGB-Undercover-Agent" is that we have absolutely no idea of where it is in the fish-tan. It's very good at hiding without anyone noticing it... We cleaned the tank 2 weeks ago and saw it once, but during the day... we can't see it anywhere. We feed the fish either flake food or Brine Shrimp... Poor little fishy.

Fish change colors naturally. It is what is written in their genes that determines what colors they will become. Different foods, such as those with color-enhancers, can effect the degree of these colors, so can tank temperature and pH, but ultimately, what is genetically meant to be "is".

Black on a gold or red fish is a very transient color - in young fish you will often see black fins or spots. These very commonly will go to all orange or red over time. A fish with white or off white and red will often turn orange and red. The color is determined by the skin under the scale.

Err.. so is it the the deep-grey-green goldfish changed orange?? Or the other ones went orange with flakes of white?

Was it like a baby goldfish that's growing? I guess you should check the water for acidity/alkaline levels n stuff as that might affect the gold fish's colour/scales.. also check the food diet provided.. That's all I can think of.. it's health might be affected in some way. Perhaps check with the pet/fish shop where you bought the fish and ask them about this. There's sometimes the potential that you were sold a sick fish that's ok now or vice versa.. I've been to fish shops were the fish were horribly sick and they were still on sale.

Many goldfish (esp. comets) are born "black" and change colors quickly. Some may maintain that color for several months, if not indefinitely. It was just your fish's time, and he may change colors even more in the upcoming weeks. Watch your mixing of fish, the goldfish will eat your Betta soon.

This happens with goldfish, the melanin in their skin can change over time.

Seven goldfish is a lot for a 40 gal tank, you will need to find them another home, or the waste in the tank will become too much.

all baby goldfish are black/gray/green/bronze color when young and turn red or orange or whatever when they get to be a couple of months old, the ones that don't color quickly are usually culled
(discarded or used as feeder fish) you have a late coloring fish
if left alone in a natural lake, goldfish and koi would revert back to their "natural" (wild) colors within 2 generations

Are you feeding them color enhancing food? This sometimes makes darker goldfish more orange looking.

7 goldfish? in a 40 Gal tank???

Goldfish need 10 Gal per fish, and you have the other fish too... your tank is already over stocked!

goldfish are nasty buggers, and produce lots of waste.

you need a bigger tank- or another tank to house half of them in one tank and half in the other.

good luck.
