Im going on 36 weeks pregnant..and I have an ultrasound scheduled for this week...it will be my 4th one because they say my baby is measuring big for his due date. Im kind of confused because I mean if he IS big what is an ultrasound going to help? Will they induce me early or what? I keep thinking what does it matter if he is 6lbs or 10 lbs? Has anyone had a similiar situation? Any help is appriciated!

Ultrasounds are completely inaccurate at judging the size of your baby.

And yes if they decide your baby is too big they will want to induce you, which may not be safe. Inducing also leads to more c-sections. In addition, if the doctor thinks you have a big baby they will be willing to wait a shorter period of time before doing a c-section. So you are probably in for a fight.

They might choose to induce a couple weeks early if your baby is large. Simply to save you from an emergancy c-section. Try to remember that ultrasound images are rough estimates. You're right, it doesn't matter if the baby is 6 pounds or 10 pounds. What matters, is the question of you delivering a 10 pound baby. Also, keep in mind that due dates are estimates as well. They're usually give or take two weeks. You could go into labor tomorrow, and have a perfectly healthy, full term baby. In two weeks your baby will be considered term, and if he's measuring big, your doctor may decide to induce, just to save you from the operating table. Quite kind, in my opinion. I've experianced both, and I would take a vaginal delivery over a c-section any day. Not that c-sections are bad, sometimes they're the safest route to go.

Good luck, I'm sure everything is fine! Happy New Year!

my son was 19 days late they didn't do an ultrasound on me but induced me which I say don't do it's much too painful and the meds they give you don't do a darn thing for the pain. If they feel baby is too big then they will do a c-section. Inducing will only try to get you to dilate which I didn't dilate enough and they wound up doing the C on me. You are better off getting the c without inducing because the next day you are going to hurt really badly, without getting induced you'll have pain but nothing compared to being induced on top of that.

I think they want to make sure you can still deliver the baby without a c-section. My baby got to big and after I pushed for 3 hours they decided to do a c-section. If he is getting to big they probably will induce early.

It matters because the baby's head can grow to a diameter so large that he/she cannot pass through the birth canal. The bones of your pelvis aren't going to move out of his/her way...

If the baby is estimated to be above a certain weight, then the only option is to deliver via C-Section.

Love the comment about no difference between a 6 and 10 pound baby. You must be a first timer.

They take measurements of how big he is, unless you are okay with delivering a 10lb baby, they may induce you a little early.

If the baby is to big it might get stuck so they are checking to make sure you won`t need to have a c-section..Don`t worry to much though, they told my sister she was going to have a big baby and she had a 7lb. baby boy..They can be off up to a pound and a half either way..Good Luck..

an ultrasound will give the doctors more information to deturman if delivering the baby naturaly will be safe or if you should have a c-section.

They need to be ready for anything, they need to know what they are dealing with so if complications arise they will be prepared to make fast decisions
