Only some. The violence of the Klan in the 60's such as the Birmingham church bombing and the murders of civil rights workers turned many people against the klan.

Come on! During the Flower Power years? The Camelot Presidency? There was rampant racism but not in an organized way. People who didn't want to live in the same neighborhood's and go to the same schools as African-Americans still would have been ashamed to be connected to the KKK. Thank God. I was there and remember having many, many discussions with people who held very prejudiced views. I remember being upset almost to the point of tears with racists. But none of them wanted to do the horrible things the Ku Klux Klan did. And, btw, when the Pilgrims landed here they were also aliens. Nobody asked them to move in either.

in the 1960s no, the Klan was a resurgent fringe group that was attempting to regain prominence in the wake of the civil rights movement, of course these ideals rekindled and refueled the hatred of racist Americans. as to the claims by some others in this forum that have no idea, the Klan was VERY popular during its second revival in the 1920s, there are many books and websites that can substantiate the popularity of the Klan during this period, while the 1920s Klan was more focused on hatred for the new wave of immigrants as for Afro Americans nonetheless they were everywhere, including such seemingly unlikely locales as new york Maine, Nebraska Oregon and Minnesota to name a few of the northern states. Klan claims that as many as 2 million Americans were members can be considered likely. based on several sources, interpretations and extrapolations, 1in 6 Americans in the mid 1920s either were members or supported or were affiliated with the Klan

The KKK has NEVER had the support of most white Americans. This was especially true during the 1960's. The KKK would have you believe that they have much more support than they actually do. It is an old propaganda trick used through the centuries by every crackpot group ever conceived.
