I'm not sure if I spelled that right or not. Anyway, I went to a doctor about 3 years ago to get one done, and the pain was so bad that they eventually had to stop; they never finished the procedure. I'm not sure why it hurt so bad; a friend of mine told me to relax and it wouldn't hurt, but it didn't turn out that way. I'm planning on getting married in 2007, and I've heard that in order to get birth control, I have to have a Paps mear (done successfully). My question is, how can I prepare for this a second time, and what can I do so that it won't be so painful? And why is this a requirement for birth control? Thanks in advance for your answers.

I'm sorry it was so painful, please let the Doctor Know this ahead of time no sex or douching for 24 hrs before. exam/ during the exam try and relax your legs apart as this will help the Doctor place the speculum in while he/she is inserting the speculum lightly valsalva which is lightly push down like your having a BM. if needed remind the doctor to go slowly. after speculum is in and they are taking the sample for the pap smear deep breathing in through your nose and blow out your mouth like your blowing out candles. I hope this helpful and all goes well

I am having a pap smear on Tuesday-yeah! Yes, you HAVE to relax. I recommend showering before you go and no sex the night before. When you are laying there think of something else. Count the tiles in the ceiling, think of a fun time. Just let your whole lower half relax. You should feel pressure and be uncomfortable but should not feel pain. They are necessary to check for problems like cervical cancer or std's and other reproductive problems. Please don't worry too much about it or you will get yourself worked up. Just think of it as a usual doctor's appointment. If you want to, call ahead and ask if you can take ibuprofen before you come. I wish you good luck and a healthy pap smear.

Pelvic exams and Pap spears are a part of a woman's life. And they can save your life, so whatever else you do, don't skip them.
Breathe deeply through both. Take in a long, deep breath through your nose, hold it for a couple of second, and slowly release it through your mouth. Keep repeating that. You should try for at least a slow 5-count for each breath in and breath out.
Now, here's a real concern. SInce you are getting married in the coming year, is this tensing behaviour confined just to physical exams?

I've found that the best advice is to relax as much as possible during your Pap Smear. If you get worked up about it, it will be painful. Try thinking about something else (like your upcoming marriage) or pop in your iPod during it to distract yourself. You need to have a Pap Smear done to test for disease, it is part of the yearly female gynocological examination.

You really need to relax. I know my first time was a few years ago and it bothered me so much but you have to get it done in order to see what's going on with your body such as cervical cancer. It also helps to determine what birth control would be good for you if you're sexually active.

I'm on birth control and my gynocologist makes me come in every 6 months. They do a paps smear once a year but in between they still make me come in to make sure everything is ok. She stickes her finger in my vagina and takes my blood pressure and weight. So you might have to go every 6 months if you are on birth control. They have to watch you cause birth control can cause problems..........

Well I have had a Dr. to be rough with me once. And I thought never again. But then I found this gynecologist that she is so gentle, she doesn't bother me at all. And I feel comfortable with her too.I don't even feel anything. And the other Dr. was a woman Dr. too but you just kinda have to find the right one for you. Ask around, to your lady friends and family to see if they have any Dr's in mind for you.
Good luck to you.

It should not hurt, you will just feel pressure. I just had one and believe me I hate going too, it's been 4 years. I had to talk myself into it. Your Doctor should talk you through it and make you feel very comfortable. Of course if your a virgin maybe it would hurt. Not sure though. Make sure you go about 5 days after you finish your last period, no douching, no sex for a couple of days before is best.

First let your doctor know what happened last time. Maybe he can give you a valium before he starts to relax you. Second take a friend to hold your hand and keep you distracted. Relax and think of your honey and your wedding anything to take you mind off of it and it will be over before you know it. I take my walkman and a book and read while I get mine.
