I personally don't think it is a problem if the parent wants to give it to them. It is not costing anybody but the parent, so what difference does it make? My son is 13 and has one. He has had a phone since he was five. It has never been a problem for us. The main reason he has it, because #1, I want him to be able to reach me anytime he wants or needs to. He is with me 98% of the time, but when he is at his grandmothers or great-grandmothers, we don't have to listen to complaints about the phone bill and tying up the phone line. Also, it comes in handy at other times: Class trips, sleepovers, ballgames. He does not even consider it as a cool thing, just as a tool of necessity if needed.

Do you have kids or a razr?

Well I personally think kids should have cell phones for emergencies only. I also see young children with Razrs and I ask myself "what were their parents thinking?"

Like I said, it's good for a kid to have a cell phone, but not a Razr. They're just kids, they don't need something that technical and that expensive. Soon, the parents will find it broken and laying in the corner.

if a parent wants to give their child a cell phone for emergencies then they should get a disney mobile, firefly, or a little prepaid phone.

I didn't get a cell phone till I was 14 (four years ago) and it was a prepaid one.

I could ask why kid's have cell phones that play music, surf, watch video and take pictures and video's.

Face it the pictures that these cameras take are of poor quality.

The purpose of the phone is communication, most kids don't need 90% of what the cell phone does, but they want it.

Oh, my nephew has a cell phone, last year, my sister asked a neighbor to watch him. My sister had car trouble, and was late getting home, when it came time for the neighbor's child to go to bed. She sent my nephew home, where he sat outside out 10 PM in the middle of the winter, because he had no way to get hold of someone. He was 9. That is the reason kid's NEED cell phones, not to socialize.

Giving a kid a cell phone isn't really neccessary until they're old enough to be left at places alone, primarily around the middle school age.

Kids don't need cell phones until they are around 13 years old. Giving a razor to a 5 year old is pointless.

I don't understand why kids (not teenagers) are packing phones. I am a mom of 5...the older two pack phones. I gave them theirs when they began driving. When they got that mobile ... I needed to be able to find them and they needed to be able to call me and tell me what they were doing.

If you give a phone to a child any younger than 14 or 15, you are asking for trouble.... Afterall, these phones are expensive and they require a ton of responsibility. You have to know that they are going to be taken care of.

I think a 12 yr old is too young to carry around a razor cell phone.

*shrug* But hey...I'm hardly a child.
