Malta was never invaded by the Germans or Italians, so could not be liberated.

The people of Malta were collectively awarded the George Cross, a civilian award for gallantry, for what they did during the constant air raids on Malta. or all I know, the George Cross is in theshape of a Maltese cross. A Maltese cross is a generic name for a cross with arms of equal length where the tip of each arm is broader than the base.

And I am Australian.

Helps if you spell it right. It's the Maltese Cross and amongst other things is the symbol used by Rifle Regiments, and has been incorporated into the badges of virtually all rifle units, including the amalgam, The Royal Green Jackets. The first postmark employed for the cancellation of the then new postage stamps in the 1840s was the shape of a Maltese cross and named accordingly. The Maltese cross also forms the basis for the design of the Order of the Bath. The Maltese cross is also the symbol of Neath Rugby Football Club in Neath, Wales.

It means Bravery of a whole nation!
We British gave a Medal in the shape of the Maltese cross to the Island of Malta after WW2. (It was for all the people who so Bravely defended their home)
The symbol had been used for centuries becoming known as the Maltese Cross in the 16th Century. Many organisations use it or a similar design and it is recognised as the symbol of the Crusades and the Knights Templar.

Yo I'm not English, but here in America....

The Badge of a Fire Fighter is the Maltese Cross. The Maltese Cross is a symbol of protection and a badge of honor. Its story is hundreds of years old.

When a courageous band of crusaders known as The Knights of St. John fought the Saracens for possession of the holy land, they encountered a new weapon unknown to European warriors. It was a simple, but horrible device of war. It brought excruciating pain and agonizing death upon the brave fighters for the cross.

As the crusaders advanced on the walls of the city, they were struck by glass bombs containing naphtha. When they became saturated with the highly flammable liquid, the Saracens would hurl a flaming torch into their midst. Hundreds of the knights were burned alive; others risked their lives to save their brothers-in-arms from dying painful, fiery deaths.

Thus, these men became our first Fire Fighters and the first of a long list of courageous men. Their heroic efforts were recognized by fellow crusaders who awarded each hero a badge of honor - a cross similar to the one fire fighters wear today. Since the Knights of St. John lived for close to four centuries on a little island in the Mediterranean Sea named Malta, the cross came to be known as the Maltese Cross.

The Maltese Cross is our symbol of protection. It means that the Fire Fighter who wears this cross is willing to lay down his life for you just as the crusaders sacrificed their lives for their fellow man so many years ago. The Maltese Cross is a Fire Fighter's badge of honor, signifying that he works in courage - a ladder's rung away from death.

The Knights of St John, and from them the St John's Ambulance Brigade, a charitable organisation providing medical support at numerous events, who use it as their emblem. We even have representatives "working" during productions at out theatre. A noteworthy organisation.

It's the sign of the Order of St John who were Templar Knights. They started off pretty well but eventually were exiled by the Pope.
It is also the emblem of Queensland in Australia (which I visited last September).
It is also used on some medals and as part of the insignia of several organisations.

It was a cross used by the crusaders and, since they all died hundreds of years ago, your question does not make much sense. Or have I missed something?
