I am not sure if this is right, but I believe it is. In the movie Eddie Murphy plays a man named " James 'Thunder' Early".
I searched on Wikipedia and it compares James 'Thunder' Early to James Brown, Marvin Gaye and others.

James "Thunder" Early. Eddie Murphy was asked that question on "Inside The Actors Studio". The character and the moves were based on a fictional character that Jackie Lomax, James Brown, Little Richard and others all stole from. He was the first but never really made it.
