This sounds more like a repressed memory - like maybe when you were a kid you burned some eggs and your hand and instead of the "adult" helping they scolded or even punished you. This is not a phobia but a block you should try to over come. Have a friend who is a good cook help you by teaching you some basics on safety and how to make the easy stuff like eggs, spaghetti and cookies, then get a simple cook book and try a few without her help and even without her presence - soon you'll forget you ever feared the kitchen. Good Luck!

Well, I've been cooking for my family for 20+ years, and I definately have a phobia of the kitchen, haha, but only because I don't want to cook anymore!! Dishes suck too. As for being burned, that signals to me a lack of experience in the kitchen, and lack of knowledge of safe methods, and lighting gas stoves and being blown up is a healthy fear to have, since that kind of thing demands respect, and if the rules are broken, look out.
Other than that, this fear sounds like something coming from someone who has no desire whatsoever to cook anything.

it all depends on the intensity of the phobia. really, there's no such thing as a "normal" phobia. someone that has school phobia might think that the person with flight phobia is unnormal. phobias are formed when you had or heard of a bad experience of the particular item and are afriad to get in contact with it because of your fear of getting harmed. the only way to rid yourself of this phobia is to know how it started and go in that kitchen and make yourself a hot cooked meal. it's the only way.

burning things just, happen. I'm a professional chef and I usually burn like 1 out of 20 things after all this time and expereince. usually not horrible, but it does happen, that human error thing flaring up :) Just relax, follow the instructions, and learn from mistakes.

I was reading a children's book (don't ask me why I was doing it) and there was a character who was scared of cooking. So, I don't think it is that unusual...
