..at the end of an argument.

The reason I ask is because the two individuals go on thinking and believing in whatever they believed regardless of what the last words are or who said them, yet it's always so important to try and have the last word. Any ideas?

I think people want to have the last word to be the person with the final thought expressed. It gives a false sense of having the upperhand in an argument. Whether or not the individuals go on thinking whatever, the person with the last word spoken will never think later..oh I should have said that..

I think it may be because people don't remember that they have 2 ears and only one mouth. Real listening requires a good deal of emotional health and inner peace, so as not to react to what teh other is saying. I person with good self-esteem doesnt always have to be seen to come out on top, with the last word. Many people look foolish josling for the last word. It does not bode well for relationships. Sometimes the best answer to a tough question is "I don't know."
