What is the significance of the reefs placed at the state funeral for former President Ford?

Three reefs were placed in front of former President Gerald Ford's casket at his state funeral: one placed by Vice President Dick Cheney; one placed by Dennis Hassert; and another by an unknown individual.

It's a way to show respect, a remembrance of one person to another who has passed on. As to if there was significance to who placed them or how many, I can't answer that. May be part of military protocol.

Do you mean "wreaths"? I don't think that a reef could be placed on a coffin.
