I'm not familiar with this musical, but since I know someone on the production, thinking of taking my 6 yr old son to the touring production, but before paying $40 each for tix, want to know if this musical is over the head of children and mostly for adults.

Aida is a tragic love story, which would probably bore a six-year-old to death. He might be interested in all the spectacle, but other than that, I would suggest that you wait with something that heavy. BTW, the Tim Rice-Elton John 'Aida' follows the same basic plot as Verdi's opera, but the treatment is very different.

As an alternative, I suggest you wait for a touring or local production of Disney's 'Beauty and the Beast'. It follows the movie almost exactly, so if he likes that, he'll like the stage show. It would be a much better introduction to musical theater than 'Aida' would be. You might, however, ask your friend if you two could have a backstage tour.

Aida is an opera. A six year old would probably like the music but would also probably be unable to sit through an entire opera, leaving you embarrassed and other patrons annoyed. If a child is used to sitting still for a long time (which is indeed rare) then it would be worth it. There are many musical performances aimed at kids which are usually shorter and people are not as upset with squirming kids, which would be more a appropriate place to introduce your child to a musical performance.
