First, lets clarify what you mean by "reason". In general things don't evolve for a "reason" ... they just evolve as a response to environment. But perhaps that's what you mean ... what were the environmental pressures that lead to mammals.

The second thing to note is that the evolution of reptiles into mammals was not a single event. A mammal is a host of many, many developments ... warm-bloodedness, fur, replacing egg-laying with placental reproduction, mammary glands, changes in diet, spinal structure, skull structure, teeth structure, inner ear, etc. etc. In all cases, many different environmental factors went into every new development. If we rewound it all and started the process going again, even slightly different environmental factors, and slightly different mutations at just the right time, would probably produce something very different from mammals.

In short, there is no way to sum the development of mammals into a single "reason" ... environmental or otherwise. It was a combination of *many* factors.

A population of reptiles may have lost its food source, and was forced to migrate to a colder region. In that case, the reptiles that had some mammalian characteristics, like warm-bloodedness, would have been more able to survive because they could regulate their own metabolism in the cold weather, while cold-blooded lizards would just have died of hypothermia.
