Great Idea! If that can't be accomplished it would be almost as good if they would at least give us the option to turn the music DOWN so that we can actually hear the dialogue of the movie :-)

As a couple of people have said, it would be nice to be able to turn the music down. Sometimes I think they have it so loud in order to cover up a bad script, bad acting which can both result in a lack of atmosphere in the film.
As for turning the music/sound effects off, in some cases it would be good to be able to do that. Terminator 3 springs to mind....the scene with the crane especially, I remember watching that and thinking that everytime the crane hit something it was the same sound effect over and over again - they couldn't be bothered to record different effects...in that case I would have gladly gone for a no sound option.

The sound of music would be a laugh in that case.
Look at films in the past, they used music sparingly and to great effect. take Zulu. a two hour movie with 15mins of music. perfect. today's film makers appear to worry that if they are not telling us how to respond to a film now - with constant music - we will some how loose intrest. it's a foolish idea.
Special effects are now no longer special for me. that's the main reason i enjoyed the new Bond - the stunts were real and had a genuine feeling of danger.

There was a film in the mid nineties called Judgement Night, the film was pretty average but the soundtrack was brilliant. Same with Demon Knight, average film, but a great soundtrack.

Could you imagine seeing 'Halloween' without the music. It would suck! The music is another 'character' in most movies because it directs everything!
'Jaws' without the build-up of the musical score? Please!
LOL!
To me, I like when they put on a dvd the option to listen to the score by itself. But, the movie without it's score would 'change' the whole perspective of the movie being watched.

you see it a little in outakes, its funny, the music adds so much tension and suspense. question is why does the music do that to us? is it conditioned or a natural thing, seems seems highly likely that we are just used to that music so we relate it to scaryness but i just dont know.

It depends on the movie...if the music is really nice, I would leave it in.

would be pretty boring; music and sound effects make or break a movie IMO.
