Well, kid, you are thinking ahead. There are other ways to get recognition besides a grant. You could start writing and submit stories to various publications. I have done this and have had 7 articles published in national magazines. This is definately impressive when I have to look for a job, employers like that regardless of whether or not the job requires writing. It shows initiative. So you could write and submit, you could volunteer somewhere and write about it...you could write about just about anything. Good luck!

Because it gives you a temporary sense of accomplishment. You derive pleasure from the mini endorphin rush, which eventually wears off and you are left with how you feel about yourself.

My guess is that your self-esteem is tied up in external "things", and, like an addict, you need it to feel good and successful.

When you decide that you alone are worthwhile (and everyone is), regardless of your situation, external things won't be as important. That adage that you can't love someone until you love yourself is true; you might need some help getting there and that's nothing to be ashamed of.

I wish you well in your personal journey!
