Let us say that the capacity of the tank is T. Then the word problem describes the situation where (1/2)T + 10 = (7/8)*T. So T/2 + 10 = 7T/8. That can be rewritten as 4T/8 + 10 = 7T/8, or 10 = 3T/8. Now multiply both sides by 8 to get 80 = 3T ==> T = 80/3.

If the tank fills from half full to 7/8 full with ten gallons, that means that the difference between 1/2 and 7/8 (or 3/8) = 10 gallons. Then divide 10 by 3/8 (or 80/3).

let x = total capacity in gallons
(1/2)x + 10 = (7/8)x
then you solve for x which should be equal to 80/3 or 26.666...

so 10 gallons is 3/8 of the volume. Divide 10 x 3 and you get the dreaded 3.333 recurring. times that by 4 you et 13.333. Thtas a half i'e 4/8. so times 13.333 by two and you have your answer of 26.666 Gallons.
Im stoned so I could be way out.
I did it this way because I forgot how to work fractions. Its been a few years!

Set the equation: x/2 + 10 = 7x/8 => 8[x/2 + 10] = 7x => 4x + 80 = 7x => 3x = 80 => x = 26.667 GL.

4/8 is half full, 10 gallons adds 3/8
so 10 gallons = 3/8
(3/8)x=10
3x=80
26 2/3 gallons
