Sulfates are important in both the chemical industry and biological systems:
The Lead-acid battery typically uses sulfuric acid.
Some anaerobic microorganisms, such as those living near deep sea thermal vents utilize sulfates as electron acceptors.
Copper sulfate is a common algaecide.
Magnesium sulfate, commonly known as Epsom salts, is used in therapeutic baths.
Gypsum, the natural mineral form of hydrated calcium sulfate, is used to produce plaster.
The sulfate ion is used as counter ion for some cationic drugs.

The International Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry (IUPAC) decided in 1993 that correct spelling of "sulphate" should be sulfate.

So is not a US/UK thing! They may both be used, but it is better to use sulfate.

Sulfate is a chemical compound containing the sulfate (SO4).

Sulfates play a significant role both in the chemical industry and in biological systems. Sulfuric acid is used in lead storage batteries and in the manufacture of nitric acid; copper sulfate is a common algicide. Organisms found near deep-sea thermal vents use sulfates for energy in place of sunlight.
