Allen Iverson is one of those rare NBA players that can fill up an opposing team's home court. The 76ers were at odds to trade him initially because of his impact on the court as well as positive impact off the court (ticket sales, apparel sales, etc.)
The Sixers have also explored trading Iverson in the past (during this past summer when a deal involving the Boston Celtics didn't work out), but when that didn't materialize, the tried to "repair broken bridges" and work out their relationship with their superstar.
Things were going fine till Iverson was "misinterpreted" in "wanting to be traded." According to Allen after the trade was made with the Denver Nuggets, he "never asked for a trade," rather just told management that "he didn't like the direction the team was going (losing)" and that if it was going to continue, he "didn't want to be a part of it." These comments prompted the 76ers to explore trade options which eventually landed the Nuggets Andre Miller, Joe Smith, and two 2007 1st round NBA draft selections.
Hope this helps.

RE:
Why did the 76ers trade Allen Iverson?
The 76ers traded Allen Iverson for Andre Miller of the Denver Nuggets and a couple draft picks. But why Allen Iverson? He's an All-Star also a MVP. But he did ask to be traded. And if he wasn't traded he would not play. So they would lose anyway. So please give me the answer. I have been...

Allen iverson got traded because he is a ball hog. Eventhough he is good, (my favorite player) he doesnt seem to know how to pass. I was reading the Boston Globe and they said that he doesnt pay attention to directions and could care less. From an inside scoop, (my dad knows the coach) he says that he wasnt even that good.

Allen Iverson is the T.O. of basketball. There is no denying the talent, but a team does not need the distraction. A team can put up with more ego when they are winning. When it is time to rebuild, it is time to get rid of the egos!!
Just watch...the Cowboys will get rid of TO as soon as Seatle beats them in the 1st round of the playoffs.

HE WOULD HAVE TO PLAY NO MATTER WHAT IF HE WAS STILL PLAYING WITH THE 76ERS. BUT THEY TRADED HIM BECAUSE THE 76ERS GOT A HELL OF ALOT OF MONEY FROM HIM IF THEY TRADED HIM SO THEY DID.
