I like Bob and Fiona. When the Pawn was a great album.

I'd be torn between two.

First up, Leonard Cohen. Yes, I know he has a reputation of essentially being a miserable sod, but when I listen to his songs, I feel like someone's broken down all the BS of the day-to-day world and touched something real and true and vitally, life-definingly important.

And second, Bob Walkenhorst, of the Rainmakers. He can match humour, philosophy, bittersweet reality and breathtakingly eloquent anger.

Links below to stores of the lyrics of each of my contenders.
Fab question, by the way.

It's hard to choose just one great lyricist of all time. There are so many great ones. Some of my favorites are (in no particular order):

Willie Nelson
Rob Thomas (of Matchbox Twenty)
Bernie Taupin
Tori Amos
Jim Morrison
Kris Kristopherson
Johnny Cash
Dolly Parton
Melissa Etheridge
Kurt Cobain
