Of course it hurts! But hey we get thru it :). It also depends on your tolerance for pain. I have had three boys... All natural births.

I can't say anything different than what everyone else has, but I want to correct the last person who referred to an epidural as a "shot" it's not a shot, it's a catheter that gets threaded into your back - in the epidural space (hence the name) and it stays in your back the whole time you labor until after you are finished birthing. The pain medication is administered continually through the catheter, you can control how much meds you get up to a certain point (they have a device that doesn't let you get more than you should, but you don't have to use all of it if you don't feel you need it.) If you are pregnant and don't know much I'd start asking a lot of questions at the doctor if I were you (that is what I did, I didn't bother taking lamaze classes, I didn't feel they were necessary, and they weren't - I was my little sister's lamaze coach and went through the classes with her, and it was all pretty useless.)

I've had 4 and the first 2 didn't hurt- I think because I was so young. But the last 2 hurt like nothing I can describe. Being older made a world of difference. If you can try doing it with no drug just when you think you can take the pain any more it over.

Everyone will tell you that it hurts, but I'll say something positive. In October, I had a homebirth with my 2nd child (my first was a c-section). The feeling is not really something I would say was "pain". Sure it didn't feel good, and it did hurt, but pain is what I think of when I smash my finger in the door or stub my toe. It is definately NOT that kind of pain. It's more like gas pains or mentrual cramps, but far more intense. Plus you get a break every 1-2 minutes to "regroup" (unless you have Pitocin which makes the contractions 10x longer and 10x worse). Good luck!

IT hurts like nothing else. I have 2 and the pain was both the same!!! Imagine a baby coming out of a small hole!!! It's not fun being in labor by no means but it's very rewarding and tiring and stressful to have a baby and raise it to become a great person.

What actually hurts are the contractions, before you give birth.. but if you get an epidural shot you wont feel the pain even when your delivering the baby and you'll be alert. But if you don't get the shot the contractions are the worst feeling you can imagine but the baby is so worth it once you hold your baby you almost forget the pain you just went through it is amazing

Here is a hint. Take hold of your bottom lip and pullit over your head and behind you. That is how much it hurts to have a baby. Or try to imagine pushing something the size of a watermelon through the eye of a needle. YES it hurts to have a baby, sometimes it hurts so bad the one giving birth passes out from the pain. If you have a problem with pain, don't do anything that would cause you to get pregnant.

It hurts pretty badly to give birth. When I had my daughter, I grabbed my husband's shoulder so hard it left hime a permanent red mark :( Ugh.
The pain, however, goes away. Labor only lasts so long, and then your baby is born. Once the baby is born, you will be so overwhelmed with love that you will just forget about the pain you went through.

yes and no.. I have three, the first hurt alot.. three days of labor thats what realy hurts, with alot of pain meds.. the second very little labor time and no pain meds at all and the third was an emergency c-section.. and the complications of the pregnancy during those 8 mths hurt more than the surgery.. but yeah its all worth it in the end no matter how much it hurts.. :)

Labor & giving birth do HURT!! really bad, especially the first one.
But you forget the pain once it is over.
As for what Katie J said, that is a pretty crappy attitude from someone with 5 kids & twins on the way. I hope your kids don't hear you saying you would rather be dead than have kids. If you can't keep your legs together & use birth control it isn't their fault. Besides, after 5, they should just fall out of you now....

Yes, it hurts terribly, and I wish I would have had an epidural both times. I didn't know if the drugs would hurt my (now adult) boys. Carol Burnett described the pain as taking your bottom lip and stretching it over your head!!! (haha!)
I am always happy to see friends who are sitting up and chatting away, oblivious to the pain, because they are on an epidural, but I secretly wish inside that I had had one! Oh well, I know what it's like to have a children like in the olden days... and I survived! Good luck to you!
