My family for generations has always had herring for new years to bring in good luck and the new year, but we had to eat the herring standing on top of a chair. I know, it sounds silly, but we've done it forever.... I've heard that black eyed peas (never had them) and some type of roast (don't know what kind of roast) was common, but was wondering what else there was. What are your traditions for bringing in the new year with good luck?

Eat black eyed peas for luck and wear red underwear on New Years Eve to find love in the new year.
Peace

Well, i'm hindu. On new year's eve night we go to the temple, and everyone parties by singing songs that you can dance to [with drums, keyboards, etc.] of the god or goddesses and then dance with each other, until the last minute of the year. Then as the countdown begins, everyone quiets down and then we say "Praise the [god or goddess name]" in hindi or punjabi. By doing this we believe that the gods will watch over us in the new year, and protect us from financial and physical harm and that we will prosper, with the gods' blessing.

My family always eats saur kraut (spelling?) and pork on for New Year's dinner. Nobody even really likes it that much, but its a German tradition and even though im mostly irish my mother had one german parent..so its wut we do! We also go outside on New Year's Eve @ midnight and make lots of noise but that is just 4 fun.
