mine is an awkward time jan 2nd and it's always difficult getting a garage to fit me in at this time, even before xmas. Mine runs out on 2nd jan 07 but can get it done between 4 -6th. Where do i stand legally?

If I have it done a month early does that mean my mot is for only 11months instead of 12?

As your M.O.T. is due on January the 2nd then you could have had it done on December the 3rd and the new M.O.T. certificate would have been dated till January 2nd 2008 therefore losing no time, this is in place so that you can get it done if you have the problem you have, and if you were to be prosecuted for not having M.O.T. that is what the court would say, and their is no 'grace' period because of the dating on system, hope this helps for next time.

There is no grace period, if you don't have a current MOT you would be driving the car Illegally and more worryingly without insurance as the lack of a valid MOT would invalidate your claim in the event of an accident (although not theft or damage whilst parked)

The only exception to this is whilst you are actually driving to the MOT station for a pre arranged and booked appointment.

The answer is as you say to get it done a month earlier, your new certificate will be valid for one year from the date of passing the test but of course you will have lost a month off of the old one.

There is no "grace period" for an MOT. The vehicle must have a valid test certificate at all times on the public highway (if it's over the testing age), including being parked. The only time you can get away with it is if you are on the way to a pre-booked test appointment.

If the run-out date is inconvenient you can have a test done up to a month before that date and it will run from that run-out date.

I'm afraid "inconvenient" is not an acceptable excuse if you get caught.

Legally, your car is out of mot and it is an offence to drive it on the public highway except to take it for a pre booked test at a MOT testing station.. There is no "grace" time legally and these days , the police have an instant check through automatic number plate recognition. To be honest, I wouldnt take the chance although plenty seem to. Your decision!!

If you dont drive your car until its time to take it for its mot then its ok. You can drive without one only to take your car to a pre booked appointment hope this helps

by the way for future referance you can have your car tested up to 1 month early and have a max of 13 months mot on it

there is no grace time for a mot .... but you can have the mot done up to 30 days in advance of your test date this wil give you 13 months mot its called a post date mot .... you can not drive your car to a mot station (with no mot )even if pre booked as your insurance wont cover you ... check your insurance policy ????

Please note the police can read your number plate and now know within seconds that your mot has expired as well as your car insurance, you are now an illegal driver. you can get mot done in 30days prior to actual date and they will add extra month on so mot is valid for 13month. You can only drive car on road legally to a prebooked mot station, so if stopped by police they can check you are actually taking car for mot!!

I'm not sure if there is a 'grace' time for MoT's, but I've heard that sometimes they can have their 'scary Mary' times....but maybe that was just the mechanic at the garage pulling my leg?

As someone else has said, you have 30 days prior to the date to get it done and post dated. You cant use the argument the garage is shut when it runs out i'm afraid.
