A friend had suggested that I add 256 ram to the existing 256. Is it a good idea?
What other things I can do to make it faster. When i first bought it 18 month ago it was much faster.

256MB is the minimum you need for Windows XP, I`d recommend you update to 1GB, but you could add 1 x 512MB to make it cheaper.

it`ll be like lightning.

More RAM is always better but I don't think you'll see much in a way of "performance". I jumped a similar machine from 256 to 768 and only saw a tiny page filing improvement.
A note on defragging. It's only really necessary if you're adding big chunks of bytes or taking them out. Sounds like you're over defragging. Check and see how many programs are running in the background via the Task Manager or by using the Startup selection in System Information/msconfig.

I am telling you three ways to increase performance 100percent. even if you do the last 2 its way much better.

1) If you dont want to spend in adding hardware. Download this spyware sweeper by emailing me so that i send you the serial key. This will automatically tweak your computer to the best like removing unnecessary shadows under icons etc.

2)

Secondly, go to Start-> run.
type msconfig
go to the last startup click it
now click disable all
click apply
click close
click restart

when your pc is restarted and you come back to windows, a window will be displayed saying you have made performance updates, blah blah blah, CHECK the box and click ok.

3) Right click on my computer
click properties
click advanced
click settings underneath performance
uncheck all options except the ast 4
last 4 options needs to be checked

Click OK
Now click error reporting
click disable error reporting
click the box which says notify...

Click ok, ok.
Restart and feel the difference.

feel the speed!Enjoy

Get at least another 256 of RAM .. keep scanning disk and defragmenting and scan regularly for spyware.

Your friend's right. You need at least 512 Mbyte of RAM. Go to
http://www.crucial.com and that website will tell you what you need. Next, go to http://www.download.com and get "Registry Mechanic" as well as "AdAware" if you don't already have equivalent software. Finally, download "Quick Startup" from
http://www.glarysoft.com which will make it easy to turn off any unnecessary startup program icons you see in the "system tray" located in the lower right hand corner of your desktop. You shouldn't have more than 6 icons there at most because each one is using up RAM memory and computing resources.

I'd definately suggest more ram, even take it to 1gb if you can afford it. If you are runing xp on 256mb you will notice a big difference. I know 512mb is around £40 so this would be inexpensive upgrade.

down load ad-ware by Lava soft it's free, it will get rid of all the crap your anti virus stuff doesn't find, I have to run mine every week but everything speeds back up and it usually finds 15 objects.
