Yes, there are some general steps that are typically followed:
Step One: Lightening (baby decends down to the pelvic area)
Step Two: Braxton-Hicks contractions (aka false labour)
Step Three: the Show (mucus plug loosens) - slight pinkish colour on your panties
Step Four: Water Breaks (amniotic fluid decends down vagina)
Step Five: Active Labour (consistent interval of contractions)
Once these consistent contractions occur (e.g. every 2 minutes apart), baby should be ready to be delivered within 24 hours and you should get to the hospital.
Hope this helps!!
PS False labour implies that the contractions (they feel like menstrual cramps) are inconsistent: 2 minutes, then 5 minutes, then 4 minutes apart.

First, you'll lose the mucus plug. It will begin to dislodge when you start dialating. You will start feeling pretty bad when early labor starts. Like menstrual cramps...good luck.
