have a brand new computer and a brand new mp3 player. i am not so tech savvy and do not know how to get music to my computer. i know that it can be done for free or minimal costs but do not seem to be able to download from any sites.

Do you want to get it legally or not? If you want it illegally I would recommend downloading BitTorrent's. You can download Azureus and you can go to websites that have Torrents on them, most Torrents require WinRar to open them and then you can upload them onto your MP3 player if you want to do it illegally.
If you want to do it legally, upload the software that came with your MP3 player, IE Itunes and you can download music from random websites all over the internet but you must pay for them, you can do it by the song, or by the CD if I remember correctly.
Personally I do not do either one, but my brother said its always best to download a song or game, play it, and if you like it buy it, if not delete it and no harms done.
I just remember the software from the last time I visited him in California during Christmas so you are in luck!

Itunes download is the best way.
Its quick and free to download.
But the songs on it aren't free.
So try limewire.
You can download itunes from apple.com
To find limewire, do a google search.
