Suzhahm, you might want to consider buying some shredded grass to plant rather than seeds for a couple of reasons;

1. It grows quicker than seeds and should cover your small backyard within the season.

2. It's almost as easy to lay as seeds. All you do is buy a bag or two of shredded lawn (preferably a soft leaf buffalo or zoysia) and scatter it over the surface. Add some fertiliser and cover with a free draining sand or lawn top dressing mix. Then water every day for the next 2 weeks reducing to once every two days over the growing season.

3. There is a greater chance of success with shredded lawn than sowing seeds. Because it's already growing there is a better chance that it will continue to do so.

4. There is less chance of weeds. If you use enough shredded lawn you can almost eliminate any weeds growing whereas weed seeds will always grow as fast, if not faster, than your grass seed.

If you plant the shredded lawn in late winter/early spring your lawn will be ready by the end of summer.

I don't know where you live but up north nothing will grow in the winter. If you put grass seed down now all you will do is feed the birds. I would suggest you wait until spring then get the soil loose and put down some grass seed then cover it with straw to keep the birds from eating it and keep it wet until it starts to grow.

Fescue grass seed is what you can plant now. Go to a local nursery and speak with a horticulturist. When you do lay the seed just cover with a thin layer of dirt to keep from birds forget the straw and fence. That is what was done at the nursery.

If your climate is too cold for this and they do germinate the grass will most likely die when it freezes I would think. Most seeds recommend planting either during the spring or late summer being that the high summer temps require very frequent watering.

I agree, when I replanted my lawn I used a short chain link fence and used it as a drag to cover up the seeds. Looks a little nicer than straw and it keeps birds from eating the seeds.
