I've helped a lot of people get into Ivy Leage schools or their equivalent, i.e. Stanford, UCLA, and USC.

Some of my general recommendations to those who aspire to attend the premiere colleges in America.

1) Achieve at least a 1300 or better SAT. Not necessary, but definitely helps. Remember, you can take the test as many times as you desire.
2) Minimum 3.8 gpa. A 4.0 is not necessary, but you really do need at least a 3.8, maybe even a 3.86 to realistically consider it a shot.
3) Extra-curricular involvement. A club officer minimum. If you're not involved in a club activity, it must be something that separates you from the crowds. For example, a month helping out in China with impoverished families is a huge plus and is what a former pupil of mine did.
4) The written essay in your application is vital. Rewrite, rewrite, rewrite. This may be the only opportunity you have to give the admitting officer a glimpse into who you are. Another pupil of mine wrote about the struggle of growing up in an Asian American family and the strife between her traditionalist parents and contemporary friends. A definite tear jerker.
5) And last but not least. You can always do something that sets you apart from the crowd. I understand that there was a student at Stanford a couple of years ago who circumnavigated the globe in a sail boat by himself at the age of 13. Maybe not quite your cup of tea, but hey, whatever it takes right.

Just remember, a recent poll revealed that 90% of CEOs do not come from Ivy League schools. Your success in life also has as much to do with how much drive and vision you have.

You usually need to be in the top 5% percent of your graduating class and have SAT scores at least in the top 80% of the country. Involved in extra-curricular activites and/or community service is valued highly also.

Good Luck!!!

75% of those admitted to top 15 schools have SAT scores over 2100 and graduated in the top ten percent of their HS classes.

If you don't have that -- then it will be difficult to get into one.
