I was recently told I have a bad stick of RAM. Windows will not boot up, I have two sticks of RAM in my computer, 1 bad one and 1 good, how can I tell what to speed to buy? Do you have to match the sticks or can you have a 256 stick and a 512 stick?

You can mix your memory with no problem, I don't know what gamingenius is talking about. There are no problems if you have a 512MB stick and a 256MB stick.

Technically, you CAN have a 256 and a 512 (but it is DEFINITELY NOT recommended). It is ideal to have two identical sticks of ram paired together. You'll need to figure out what speed you have (they're labeled like this PC3200, PC2700, etc). There are some software programs out there that will tell you what you have. It's usually easier just to nyx both and buy two of the same thing at bestbuy.

Most modern motherboards will support dual channeling of memory and you must have IDENTICAL sticks installed in alternate slots.

If you have miss matched speeds the memory will only run as fast as the slowest stick. Find out what motherboard you have and then go on the net for a manual or Tech Data and it will tell you exactly what kind of memory to install.
