I have never heard anybody mention these countries, are they important on a global scale? Do they contribute anything to the world?

Yes! Many of these nations in that area are becoming more important economically; they are getting more industrial. So, they do contribute the smog and pollution that comes along with that...

But, really, some of these "-stans" are rich in oil such as Azerbaijan.
