This tradition dates back to medival times when all women were dwarfs and men wanted to show there true love by looking in their woman's eyes, so they would get on one knee---down to their beautiful woman's eye level. After the feminist movement in the 1900s, it is believed that the reason became much different. It was a way of surrenduring to the woman who would torture you for the rest of your life.
In all reality, I think these stories may not be true. It is a means of showing respect like bowing in Asian cultures, or saluting in the military.
