Because they can. Nothing like making laws for our best interest when they can't guarentee the outcome. Banning smoking isn't a guarentee that lung cancer will decrease since people die from lung cancer who have never smoked. There's plenty of other "causes" besides cigarettes and there's nothing done about those. Now they're banning trans -fat with no guarentees. They can't guarentee me that the hormones and such they pump into our meats aren't doing more damage than the trans-fat. I know many bikers who feel less safe with helmets especially when it's brutally hot and your in traffic and it effects your hearing and vision.
Part of the fault is due to law suits by people who can't take responsibility for their own stupid actions. Everybody wants blame someone else for their problems. Accidents happen.....no one gets out of here alive....life isn't fair. Deal with it. Too much government influence infringes on too many personal rights especially when they can't offer 100% guarentees of safety.

THE LAWS ARE IN REVIEW CONSTANTLY TO ADDRESS THE LIABILITIES THAT INSURANCE COMPANIES HAVE TO PICK UP, THEY IN TURN MAKE DECISIONS TO REGULATE FROM THE STAND POINT YOUR NOT DOING YOUR BEST TO KEEP DOWN COST OF RISING ACCIDENTS THAT THEY FEEL I YOUR ARE GOING TO IGNORE THE CONSEQUENCES THEN THEY IN ACT HELP JUST LIKE THE SMOKE DETECTORS GOING DOWN ON YOU JAN.FIRST, IT IS A MURPHY'S LAW THAT IT DOES WORK AND U ARE THE EXCEPTION, WE LIVE BY THE RULE NOT THE EXCEPTIONS, THE PHENOMENA WAS SCARING ME TO DEATH WHEN THE HELMET LAW FOR MOTORCYCLES WERE COMING OF AGE TO INCLUDE THE SEAT BELT TOO AND I WAS PICTURING A BIKER WITH A SEAT BELT ON FOR ABOUT TWO YEARS IN MY MIND ALL TORE UP AND STILL IN THE HARNESS, YOU NEVER KNOW WHO GETS TO PULL YOUR STRINGS, I WAS A FAILURE IN DRIVERS RENEWAL BECAUSE THE TEST FOR MOTORCYCLES HAVE A WRITTEN PART THAT HAS NOTHING IN IT CONTEXTS THAT IS REAL TALK IT IS ONLY A LEARNED QUESTION AND ANSWER TEST AND HAS NO TRUE MOTORCYCLE UNDERSTANDING IN ITS CONVEYING OF REQUESTED ANSWERS, THE WRITER OF THE TEST WAS DUMBER THAT HELL BUT THE ANSWERS THAT WERE REQUESTED ARE WHAT THEY WANT AND DO NOT TAKE INTO CONSIDERATION WHAT THEY ARE REALLY SAYING IN NOT KNOWING ANYTHING ABOUT BIKING LINGUISTICS

I am with you 110%..I got pulled over and ticketed for not wearing a seatbelt but the other day a driver was weaving in and out of traffic (right after Christmas in the after Christmas sale)..could have killed someone in a split second...wasn't a cop around... As an adult, it should b my Choice whether I want to wear them or not..not the govts. it may save my life but i have heard of many times that it kills people (car catches fire, etc). Hey,.if it's my time..it's my time..We have to wear them but illegals and others drive without license and insurance and nothing happens...shouldn't we be paying more attention to that than to those whose legal right it is to REFUSE to wear seat belts.. y don't they tell us what to eat, when to sleep, what to wear, etc..it's coming down to that...

You're in the minority, there's overwhelming evidence that seatbelts save lives. You're very lucky. I have a relative who is a police officer, and he's seen some horrifice accidents where passengers were thrown hundreds of feet from their vehicles and subsequently hit by other vehicles. So, if you don't believe that seatbelts save lives, do you buckle your kids in? I don't think they're infringing on our rights, sometimes the government has to legislate common sense for those members of society that don't have any.

What you do as an adult is your business. However, if you're adult enough to have a child it is your responsibility to take care of and protect that child. This means making sure they are in car seats, booster seats, seat belts, whatever is appropriate for the age of the child. I don't feel that a $25.00 ticket for not wearing a seat belt, if pulled over for something else, is enough. We need steeper fines and we need to be pulled over if we are stupid enough to have a child standing up in the front seat of the car. This is just common sense, people!!!!!! Statistics show that seat belts save lives!!!!!

The sad part is not that the government made the seat belt law. The sad part is that the government had to pass a law to protect dumb asses who are too stupid to wear them to save their own lives.

i argue about this all the time...and if you notice the media has a bias to it. I knew a guy who was in a wreck he was ejected from vehicle. they said if he had been wearing his seatbelt he would have been killed.
I,ve noticed when watching or listening to the news, if someone is in a wreck and they are killed wearing a seatbelt they will not mention the fact that they were wearing one. If they were killed not wearing one they harp on it. Same goes if they live and was wearing one. I want the right to choose if i want to wear one or not!
same goes with smoking ban it apolls me the government telling a business owner that he can not allow a legal activity in his business.

THE FIRST THING YOU SHOULD KNOW ABOUT ABOUT "SEAT BELT LAWS" IS THAT THEY ARE NOT LAWS AT ALL , RATHER THEY ARE STATUTES (A LEGISLATIVE ACTION GIVEN THE FORCE OF LAW) WHICH ARE GENERATED THROUGH YOUR PARTICULAR STATES GOVERNING BODY. AS FAR AS INFRINGING UPON YOUR RIGHTS YOU SHOULD KNOW THAT WHEN YOU APPLIED FOR A DRIVERS LICENSE THAT YOU ENTERED INTO CONTRACT WITH THE ISSUEING AGENCY AND THAT BY ENTERING INTO THIS CONTRACT YOU AGREED TO BE BOUND BY THE RULES SET FORTH IN YOUR JURISDICTION BY THE GOVERNING LEGISLATIVE BODY. NOW THAT BEING SAID I WILL AGREE THAT YOUR RIGHTS ARE BEING INFRINGED UPON ALTHOUGH YOU ARE PROBABLY NOT REALLY SURE WHAT YOUR RIGHTS ARE IN THIS PARTICULAR SITUATION. THE RIGHT TO TRAVEL IS CLEARLY DEALT WITH UNDER ARTICLE 6 IN THE UNITED STATES CONSTITUTION WHICH DEALS WITH THE CITIZENS RIGHT TO TRAVEL. "OUR SYSTEM OF LAW DICTATES THE FACT THAT THERE ARE ONLY TWO WAYS TO LEGALLY REMOVE A RIGHT BELONGING TO THE PEOPLE. THESE ARE-#1 BY LAWFULLY AMENDING THE CONSTITUTION, OR #2- BY A PERSON KNOWINGLY WAIVING A PARTICULAR RIGHT." IN YOUR SPECIFIC CASE YOU WAIVED YOUR RIGHTS TO FREE TRAVEL BY APPLYING FOR A DRIVERS LICENSE, THEREBY PLACING YOURSELF WITHIN THE JUSIDICTION OF THE ISSUEING AGENCY TO BE BOUND BY THE RULES AND REGULATIONS AS SET FORTH BY STATE LEGISLATURE. YOU MIGHT WANT TO READ UP ON WHAT YOUR RIGHTS REALLY ARE AND WHAT YOU AS AN INDIVIDUAL CAN DO TO IMPLEMENT AND EXERCISE YOUR RIGHTS AS SET FORTH IN THE CONSTITUTION. THIS LINK www.worldnesstand.net/law/driving_is_a_right.htm MIGHT ANSWER SOME OF THE QUESTIONS YOU MAY HAVE CONCERNING YOUR RIGHTS ON DRIVING. BECAUSE BELEIVE IT OR NOT "The American citizen does indeed have the inalienable right to use the roadways unrestricted in any manner as long as they are not damaging or violating property or rights of another" (ITEMS IN QUOTATATIONS ARE EXCERPTS FROM SOURCE ARTICLE) I HOPE THAT THIS HELPS ANSWER YOUR QUESTION.

What I don't understand is why they have a law insisting on seat belts but here in Florida a motorcyclist does not have to wear a helmet.

"What do I mean when I say that we first sought liberty? I sometimes wonder whether we do not rest our hopes too much upon constitutions, upon laws, and upon courts. These are false hopes; believe me, these are false hopes. Liberty lies in the hearts of men and women. When it dies there no constitution, no law, no court can save it. No constitution, no law, no court can even do much to help it. While it lies there it needs no constitution, no law, no court to save it. And what is this liberty which must lie in the hearts of men and women? It is not the ruthless, the unbridled will. It is not the liberty to do as one likes. That is the denial of liberty and leads straight to its overthrow. A society in which men know no check upon their liberty soon becomes a society in which liberty is the possession of only a savage few, as we have learned to our sorrow. And so what is the spirit of liberty? I cannot define it, I can only tell you of my own faith. The spirit of liberty is the spirit which is not too sure that it is right. The spirit of liberty is the spirit which seeks to understand the minds of other men and women. ..."
