you should buy a wireless router with firewall, I have one and its great, no hackers can get to you, so I don`t use a software firewall.

I could not recommend this enough, below is the link for the type of product you are after.

your looking at about 60 quid.

search for `wireless routers` on Google, I`m using D-Link and it`s good, email me if you have any question.

You don't need your desktop to be wireless, the wireless connection in the laptop is used instead of an ethernet connection.

The laptop should utomatically find available wireless networks, if wireless encryption is enabled in the hub you will need to put the key in to set up the network. You may also need to press a button on the hub before connectiing for the first time to allow the laptop to pair with the hub.

There should be a guide that came with the hub or possibly a set up cd that would help with this

The computer that is connected to the net now is called your Gateway.

What you have to do is install a wireless Network Interface Card (NIC) in your gateway and have a wireless card in your laptop if you want the 2 computers to talk to each other.

A simpler way is to have the Laptop stand alone by installing a Mobile Wireless Card into the laptop. It could then connect to the net without any other computer using the mobile phone network.

The best thing is talk to your service provider and tell them what you want to do and they will come up with a solution for you.

You should have an Ethernet cable and a USB cable in your BT Home Hub box. You can connect your desktop or laptop to the Home Hub and Internet through one of these cables if you don't have a wireless card in your computer.

If the laptop doesn't have a built in wireless card, you'll have to purchase something like the following product and install it in the laptop before you can connect wirelessly:

You will need a wireless modem or router to hook up the laptop, your desktop will need no more hardware, since it is hooked to the wire.If your laptop has built in wireless, you will need no more equipment for it, but if it doesn't have , you will need a wireless card to insert in the pcmia slot.

Nope! You need a wireless router, that you do. Get something like the linksys WRT54G (you can get them at bestbuy or compusa) and hook your internet into the WAN port. Then, connect your desktop into the LAN port and setup your wireless network by typing 192.168.1.1 into your web browser (user: admin pw: admin). Once you've set up your wireless network, your daughter should be able to find it via the windows wireless network setup. Just put in your WEP key (if you put one in. And I do recommend at LEAST a WEP key) and you're done!

Further to the first answer: a hardware firewall is great; but if there's *any* risk that *any* other device on your LAN might not be perfectly protected (e.g. does everyone else update their virus sigs frequently etc.?) then you still need to run a software (aka personal) firewall on your PC.
